KEYWORDS
FUNCTION AND FUNCTIONING OF TOOLS MADE FROM OSSEOUS MATERIALS (BONE, DENTIN, ANTLER), PRINCIPALS OF ANALYSIS AND OBSERVATION OF USE WEAR.
SUBJECT
Macro and micro use-wear: the foundation of functional analysis
In association with the development of technological studies of osseous industries, functional analyses of osseous tools have also been the subject of recent advances. More effective research methods and techniques now allow the observation and analysis of macro and micro use wear, which provide information concerning the function and functioning of prehistoric tools and weapons made from bone, dentin and antler.
PROGRAM
The main goal of this course is to train students to recognize macro and micro usewear traces and to record and communicate their observations. The program is thus composed of several methodological sections whose objectives are to:
- present the different components of the traceological signatures of use-wear traces (modifications to the volume and surface alterations);
- identify “generic” usewear traces (micro-polish, striations, blunting, use flakes etc.) and characterize their variations according to the kinetics of the tool and the material worked;
- observe these usewear traces at different scales (naked eye, binocular magnifier, microscope, etc.);
- describe and interpret the usewear traces identified based on an experimental reference base (create a descriptive data sheet);
- represent use-wear traces: drawings (naturalistic and codified);
- exploit functional data (how to integrate the identification of usewear traces and the uses they represent into a global procedure).
